K'Naan Warsame is a hip hop artist, poet and writer. K'Naan means traveller in Somali and he hails from Mogadishu (Hawiye clan). He was influenced by the hip hop records his father sent him as a child and began rapping once he had a good command of English.
He now lives in Ontario, Canada in the midst of a large Somali community. He is seen as one of Africa's best rappers and has been praised for his conscious lyrics. His lead single, Soobax made it to the soundtrack of FIFA Football 2006, by EA Sports.
He had the chance to speak at the 50th Anniversary of the UN Commission for Refugees and read a poem that attacked the UN’s failed relief mission in Somalia in 1991. He has spoken of his hit song, Soobax, as "the anthem for the revolution going on in my country (Somalia) right now".
His second album, Troubadour was hugely popular and his videos, ABCs, etc were shown on MTV. His song, Waving Flag was chosen as the official FIFA World Cup 2010 anthem and added to the EA Games soundtrack for the games.
K'naan won the 2010 Juno Awards (Canada) for Artist of the Year and Songwriter of the Year.
