Siphokazi

Siphokazi Maraqana is a South African musician from Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape. Her music is a combination of Afro-soul, jazz, gospel, and Afro-pop.

Her family was a great support, and encouraged her to sing gospel and join the school choir at a young age. In 1999, she moved to Johannesburg, where she joined the Sibikwa Community Arts Centre. There, she studied music theory and other music basics. In 2000 she started a music technology course at Central Johannesburg College, studying sound engineering and music production.

She also had a role in the feature film 'Sophiatown', playing the role of a resident band singer. She also featured in the late Princess Magogo Project as the lead singer.

Before her debut release, she had worked as a backing vocalist and a featured soloist with renowned artists such as Tshepo Tsola, Ringo Madlingozi, Mat Matshikiza, Simphiwe Dana, Zamajobe, and Stimela.

Her debut album 'Ubuntu Bam' was released in 2006. Her second album was self-titled as Siphokazi. She had her 5 nominations (best newcomer, best album of the year, best female, best adult contemporary african album and best producer) and two wins (best newcomer and best adult contemporary African album) at the 2007 SAMA awards.
